American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification & Recertification (Blended Learning) Courses

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (Blended Learning) Course:

The Lifeguarding course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This course includes CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification. There will be a pre-course Swim Test 1 week prior to the start of the course. (details for the pre-course swim test are below). Students who are successful at the pre-course will be given a link to the Online Learning portion of the course. All of the e-learning portion of the course must be completed prior to the in-person portion of the course.

  • Participants must be at all in-person sessions.  Makeups are not available.
  • Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of the course.
  • Pre-Course Swim Test:
    •  Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards. -After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading. -After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards. -While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control. -You may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. -Swim goggles are allowed. ■While treading, you can only use your legs. -Place your hands under your armpits. -Your head must remain above the surface of the water.
    • Timed Event: Goggles are not allowed for the timed event. -You have 1 minute, 40 seconds to complete the following sequence. -Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. -Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. -Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. -Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps
    • A non-refundable deposit of $50 is due at registration to take the pre-test.

Course #3: American Red Cross Lifeguard RECERTIFICATION Certification.:

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification course is to provide participants with the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting in order to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
To enroll in the Lifeguarding Recertification course, you must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days for American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. To participate in the recertification course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation, which includes two parts and takes place during the first class session.
